Vietnam North-West Motorbike Tours

Northwest Vietnam (Tay Bac) (6 provinces: Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, Lai Chau, Son La). This subregion is located on right bank of Hong River.

The remote northwest of Vietnam appeals to those wanting to get off the beaten track in one of Vietnam's most beautiful, unaffected and untouristed areas.

The travellers who do venture to Mai Chau, Son La and Dien Bien Phu often do so by way of a hired jeep and driver or do it by motorbike, while those striking straight north to Vietnam's hilltribe capital of Sapa avail themselves of the comfortable and efficient overnight train to Sapa. Whichever way you're headed, prepare yourself for stunning scenery as you pass through spectacular ravines and over breathtaking passes.

Best known for the burgeoning trekking centre of Sapa, there is a lot more worth investigating in this part of the country. The remote French firebase of Dien Bien Phu remains a drawcard, but it's as much the attraction of the trip there as the town itself that is worth visiting. A trip to Dien Bien Phu is easily combined with an approach to Sapa via "the back way" over the Fansipan pass (Vietnam's highest), allowing for more stunning scenery and the opportunity to see some of the less touristed parts of the country.

Another popular destinations is Mai Chau whose day-trekking and stunning scenery have helped it develop into a small tourist centre en-route to Dien Bien Phu -- many trips from Hanoi run out to Mai Chau -- and with good reason. It also forms a comfortable spot to rest those weary limbs before continuing onwards and up into the hills.

Day 1 : Offroad Motorbike Tours from Hoi An to Hue via DMZ: Hoi An Motorcycle Tours to Prao - Homestay at Co Tu Hilltribe's Village

We drive to the remote mountain village of Prao, stopping at historic Cham towers and monuments from the French Indochina war along the way. After refreshments, we ascend into the highlands through Co Tu minority towns, stop for a picnic lunch and swim in the idylic mountain streams. We dine at a top local restaurant - a great experience by itself.

Day 2: Offroad Motorbike Tours from Hoi An to Hue via DMZ: Prao Motorcycle Tours to Khe Sanh via A Luoi

Day two starts early with breakfast before embarking on a new section of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. We ride through pristine rainforest along the Lao border and over spectacular mountain passes, then stop for picnic lunch in a spectacular mountain waterfall, where you can cool off with a swim. Following this we travel through the A Shau Valley, a famous American War battleground.

After lunch we leave A Luoi, and follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail to Khe Sanh. We visit the Khe Sanh combat base and memorial and museum.

Day 3 : Offroad Motorbike Tours from Hoi An to Hue via DMZ: Khe Sanh Motorcycle Tours along Highway 9 to Hue via Vinh Moc tunnels

Driving along Highway 9, we pass famous American war sites like the Rock Pile and Camp Carol, before crossing the former border between North and South Vietnam at the 17th parallel. We arrive at the Vinh Moc tunnels, where an entire village went underground in the 1960s to survive the bombing. After exploring the tunnels, we head to a local beach where you can cool off with a swim.

After lunch we drive along the coastline and arrive in Hue late afternoon.

Day 4 : Offroad Motorbike Tours from Hoi An to Hue via DMZ: Hue Motorcycle Tours to Hoi An via Da Nang

You can visit the Hue Citadel in the morning, before riding out off Hue. We follow a distinctive coastal route and stop for a delicious seafood lunch at a local beach.

We swim here before continuing onto Hai Van Pass, the highest point on Highway 1. We ride on big open windy roads where traffic is rare and along some of the most scenic landscape in Vietnam. We stop at famous China Beach for a cold drink before arriving in Hoi An.

Optional Abseiling at Marble Mountain on day 1:

We walk up Marble Mountain into the rappelling area, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

The first rappel is a short walk from the practice area and enjoys a fantastic view of the ocean. This 22 meter line has great exposure, fantastic scenery and makes you feel like you are much higher than you actually are.

Then we do our final rappel; a monster 50 meter drop into a gaping hole so deep and dark that you can’t see the bottom. This fantastic cave rappel drops right out of the jungle down into a temple chamber. Get ready for a full on Tomb Raider experience!

We drive the coast road along China Beach, stopping for drinks the beach before heading up and over the Hai Van Pass, the highest point on Highway 1. Day 2 : VIETNAM CENTRAL MOTORBIKE TOURS OF WONDERS: Hue Motorcycle Tours to Phong Nha Cave (Tunnels and trails)

After an early start, we take small country roads up the coast. Crossing the former border between North and South Vietnam at the 17th parallel, we arrive at the Vinh Moc tunnels, where an entire village went underground in the 1960s to survive the bombing. After exploring the tunnels, we head to a local beach where you can cool off with a swim followed by lunch. We then head away from the coast on the eastern branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway to Phong Nha-Khe Bang national park.

Tonight’s accommodation is in a newly built family-run farm-stay retreat where you can talk freely to the locals about their wartime experiences.

Day 3 : VIETNAM CENTRAL MOTORBIKE TOURS OF WONDERS: Phong Nha adventure Tours with Kayaking, Trekking

Awake to the sounds of rural Vietnam. With a day free to explore Phong Nha national park,we take a morning boat ride into the magnificent Phong Nha limestone cave, the second-longest wet limestone caves in the world, followed by a local lunch and an afternoon of tubing, kayaking or trekking through this amazing old-growth rainforest.

Day 4 :VIETNAM CENTRAL MOTORBIKE TOURS OF WONDERS: Phong Nha Motorcycle Tours to Khe Sanh (Ho Chi Minh Trail)

Today’s ride is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Obtaining special military permission, we are able to drive the remote A LUOI MOTORBIKE TOURwestern branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway through majestic limestone karst and spectacular old-growth jungle. Be amazed at the tenacity of the Vietnamese people during the US war, as this road follows the original HCM Trail through some of the most rugged terrain on Earth.

Arriving in Khe Sanh, we visit the site of the former marine combat base, capping off an amazing day of riding and history.

Day 5 - VIETNAM CENTRAL MOTORBIKE TOURS OF WONDERS: Khe Sanh Motorcycle Tours to Prao via A Luoi (Hill tribe country)

Leaving Khe Sanh early, we cross the Cuban-built Da Krong bridge, where the stilt houses of hill tribes still line the road. After climbing up to the A Shau valley, where Colin Powell was injured by a punji stick during the war. After a picnic lunch at the foothills of Hamburger Hill, we continue along one of the more remote stretches of the HCM Highway to the ethnic minority town of Prao. A local dinner is an experience in itself.

Day 6 - VIETNAM CENTRAL MOTORBIKE TOURS OF WONDERS: Prao Motorcycle Tours to Hoi An

We take a small road out of Prao, passing ethnic tribes and stopping to swim and explore the villages as we descend from the mountains.

Once in the delta, we follow our famous country laneway route into Hoi An, completing our six-day loop of central Vietnam.

Optional Abseiling at Marble Mountain on day 6:

We walk up Marble Mountain into the rappelling area, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
